Gaia, an artwork by Luke Jerram

Aug 19, 2019 - Sep 15, 2019

Peterborough Cathedral

Gaia, a touring artwork by Luke Jerram, is to be displayed in the Cathedral from Monday 19 August until Sunday 15 September. The same artist created the Museum of the Moon, which was shown at the Cathedral in October last year, attracting an estimated 40,000 visitors. Measuring seven metres in diameter, Gaia features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the earth’s surface. The artwork provides the opportunity to see our planet on this scale, floating in three-dimensions.The installation, which will hang under the central tower of the Cathedral, creates a sense of the Overview Effect, which was first described by author Frank White in 1987. Common features of the experience for astronauts are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.

Prize-winning Poet Charles Bennett: Cloud River

Sep 20, 2019 - Sep 20, 2019

The Old Barn, Mill Lane, Wadenhoe

7pm – 8.30pm. Cloud River is a book of lyrical landscape poetry set in the Cambridgeshire Fens; a landscape which, at first impression, seems flat, dull and featureless. The startling originality of the book stems from its mission to revise and overturn these impressions. Through an examination of lines (on fields, maps, the sky and the page), it slowly but powerfully reveals the intrinsic interest, peculiarity and dynamism of the Fens and in its flowing music, exemplifies how a confrontation with level lands, straight rivers and big skies can result in a balancing of spirit and a fresh appreciation of England’s lowest and newest landscape. A light supper is included, and you may take your own drinks or purchase hot or soft drinks at the venue. Tickets £10 from the Oundle Box Office, 4 New Street, Oundle. Open hours: 10am – 4pm Mon to Fri: Tel 01832 274734. Any queries call Helen on 07743988181 or email oundlelitfestival@hotmail.co.uk
